Collaborations between universities and schools

History UK have been fostering and supporting collaborations between universities and schools. The working group includes representatives from the Historical Association, HTEN and a range of universities.

The working group have produced the following advice and guidance for those interesting in starting and sustaining collaborations between universities and schools:

HUK and HTEN Guide to Collaboration
This document – written by David Ingledew and Victoria Crooks on behalf of HTEN members working in collaboration with HUK – seeks to promote and support collaboration between academic historians and primary and secondary history teachers and their pupils.  It outlines some of the pragmatic considerations for those wanting to initiate cross-phase collaboration and introduces the Initial Teacher Training Teacher Educator as a potential knowledge broker in these collaborations.

HUK Collaborating with Schools – Advice and Guidance
This document – written by HUK members Sarah Longair, Daniel Laqua and Tracey Loughran – outlines key aspects of managing school–university collaborations. It is a step-by-step guide that identifies different types of collaborations and how to make them work. The document notes the benefits of such collaboration and includes an analysis of schools collaborations that featured in submissions to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.

HUK Overview of Major UK Funders’ Positions on Impact and Engagement
This is a very brief guide to how the major UK organisations that fund historical research integrate impact and engagement into their schemes (last updated December 2024).

HUK Survey: Impact Case Studies involving collaborations with schools
This is an informal survey of REF2021 UoA 28: History impact case studies that included work in primary, secondary, or further education.

The working group are also developing case studies of collaborations and resources that demonstrate the ‘value’ of studying history and address the question ‘why study history at university’.

Expressions of Interest – Case Studies of Collaborations
HUK are developing a series of history case studies for publication on their website about collaborations between schools (primary and secondary) and universities on different aspects of history. We are particularly interested in showcasing the value of these collaborations from the perspectives of the different collaborators.
Case studies will include an outline of the project and its outcomes and perspectives from both the school teacher(s) and university academic(s) involved (plus teacher educators where actively involved in the collaboration).
If you are interested in contributing a case study, please complete the HUK collaborations case studies EoI form.
